What is Gmail? -

You may have heard the hype. You may have just been invited and wonder what all the fuss is about. Exactly what is Gmail?

Gmail is a web based Email service very similar to existing services such as Hotmail or Yahoo. The Gmail service is provided by Google. Yes the very same Google that runs that little search engine you might have heard of.

Gmail allows you over 2812.214714 megabytes (and counting) of free storage That's a lot of Email messages. Currently I have over 10,000 Email in my Gmail account. These are taking up about 10% of my allowed storage space. So as Google put it "you'll never need to delete another message."

That's the idea anyway. You just 'Archive' old email messages. This is great if you are subscribed to a mailing list. You can go back and search your stored Email messages as easily as you would search the World Wide Web. Using the Powerful Google Search Function it is easy to find messages you need.

One of the most useful features for me is the 'Conversation View '. Grouping all replies with the original email message makes it very easy to follow a discussion. Again this is especially useful if you are subscribed to email mailing lists or just receive lots of email.

"Are there any down sides?", I hear you ask. Well yes and no. There is the privacy issue. Google scan all your messages then analyses the words in the messages to provide you with targeted ads. This has proved to be a major issue with some people. Not so much the ads, but the scanning of the messages themselves. It seems to have mainly gone away now, however before signing up for any service you should always read the Terms and Conditions and the website's privacy policy. For Gmail both of these documents are available from the Gmail website.

The adverts themselves are very hard to notice. I must admit after using Gmail for several months I don't even notice the ads any more. That's probably not good for Google and I am sure they will shake things up a bit before the launch. But for now its good.

At the moment Gmail is in 'Beta' this means that you can't just signup for an account. You have to be invited. If you know someone with a Gmail account then ask them if they have any spare invites. Another place is Gmailswap.com. They provide a swapping forum where people with invites can swap them for all sorts of things from postcards and pictures to ....

If you are one of the first people here you can try one of the links below. These are Gmail invites. Click on one and it will either let you create a Gmail account, or if someone has beat you too it, it won't. :)

In some parts of Europe including the UK you can not get '@gmail.com ' email addresses. You can still get Google Mail, however, your email address will end '@googlemail.com '

In partnership with Google we can now offer a limited number of '@www-ss.com' email addresses. These come with all the power of gmail as our service is run on Google servers. You can choose below.
